Being part of the steering committee for Connecting the Docs has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career. This initiative isn’t just about training and retaining doctors—it’s about recognizing individual talents, fostering professional growth, and building a sense of community that lasts a lifetime.
At Connecting the Docs, we pride ourselves on identifying the unique skills each doctor brings to the table and enabling them to flourish into fully capable and productive professionals. One of our core goals is to ensure doctors feel a strong sense of belonging within their community of practice. This is achieved through mentorship, good management practices, and unwavering support for their whole-of-life development.
We know how challenging it can be for doctors to balance professional aspirations with personal commitments. That’s why we’re focused on creating an environment where they can grow without sacrificing their connection to the communities they serve. A significant part of our workforce comprises doctors from overseas—80% of our team were born overseas, and 60% earned their primary medical degrees outside Australia. We take immense pride in supporting these doctors as they navigate the transition into the Australian healthcare system. We understand the hurdles they face and provide them with exposure to local systems in a highly supportive and structured way. Our approach not only equips them with the skills to succeed but also integrates their diverse experiences into our healthcare landscape.
One of the highlights of Connecting the Docs is our unique, vertically integrated pathway for General Practitioners (GPs) with proceduralist ambitions. This is the only program of its kind in Victoria’s sub- regional settings, allowing doctors to complete their GP fellowship and then transition into subspecialties or teaching roles—all within one location. This pathway is particularly beneficial for doctors with families. By eliminating the need to relocate, it ensures stability for their loved ones while providing access to quality education and community support. It’s a win-win situation that allows doctors to focus on their growth while keeping their family close.
What makes Connecting the Docs truly special is its ability to create a sense of belonging and connection. By prioritizing mentorship and holistic development, we’re not just training doctors—we’re building resilient healthcare communities. I’ve seen firsthand how this initiative transforms careers and lives. Doctors who once felt isolated now thrive in an environment that values their contributions and supports their aspirations. This sense of connection is crucial, not just for the individual but for the community they serve.
Being part of Connecting the Docs has been a privilege. It’s inspiring to witness the impact of this initiative on both the individuals we support and the broader healthcare landscape. When we prioritize people and their growth, we create a ripple effect that uplifts entire communities.
For those considering a career pathway through Connecting the Docs, I can confidently say this: you won’t just find opportunities for professional growth—you’ll find purpose, stability, and a community that celebrates your journey. Here’s to continuing to empower doctors and build stronger, more connected communities together.
