Esteemed internship programs are offered at Echuca Regional Health and Mildura Base Public Hospital, where we offer a diverse array of clinical experiences designed to lay a strong foundation for your medical career.
Mildura Base Hospital
The Mildura Base Public Hospital’s internship program is renowned for its dynamic hands-on experiences and exceptional access to consultants, complemented by weekly protected tutorial sessions and a wealth of informal face-to-face teaching opportunities. With the appointment of a new Director of Medical Education, MBPH is positioned to reach new heights in delivering superior education to its medical workforce.
The hospital’s philosophy is deeply rooted in supporting the professional growth of junior doctors, a commitment that has intensified with the introduction of two-year internship contracts in 2023. These contracts aim to offer junior doctors continuity in their training and a pathway to pursue specialised vocational programs.
Diverse Medical Rotations: The internship offers five terms in various specialties, each designed to provide in-depth knowledge and hands-on practice:
- Emergency Medicine: Acute care and the management of critical conditions.
- General Medicine: Broad exposure to adult internal medicine and its sub-specialties.
- General Surgery: Operative and perioperative care along with patient management.
- Psychiatry: Mental health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Orthopaedics: Musculoskeletal system care, from trauma to elective procedures.

Echuca Regional Health
The Echuca Regional Health (ERH) Internship Program provides a rich blend of core and non-core medical rotations. Designed for a hands-on learning experience, the program equips interns with a wide-ranging skill set across key areas of medicine.
Diverse Medical Rotations: The internship offers five terms in various specialties, each designed to provide in-depth knowledge and hands-on practice:
- Emergency Medicine at ERH (Core)
- General Surgery at ERH (Core)
- General Medicine at ERH (Core)
- Rehabilitation, Aged Care, Palliative Care Medicine (RAP) at ERH (non-core)
- General Practice Placement based at Echuca Moama Family Medical Practice (non-core)
Emergency Medicine: At ERH, the Emergency Department (ED) sees approximately 25,000 presentations annually. It is led by the FACEM Director of Emergency Medicine, who, along with a dedicated team of FACEMs, Rural Generalists, GPs, and ACEM Registrars, delivers critical care to both the local community and visitors.
General Surgery: The General Surgery department at ERH features a collaborative team of general surgeons and proceduralists under the guidance of the Director of Surgery. Interns in this specialty have the opportunity to work closely with senior staff, including a SET surgical registrar from Austin Health and two surgical HMOs, gaining hands-on experience in the theatre as first assistants and managing surgical ward patients.
General Medicine: Interns rotating through the General Medical Units, including the High Dependency Unit (HDU), receive supervision from General Physicians or Rural Generalists, along with a Basic Physician Trainee and an HMO. This rotation is essential for interns to be deeply involved in patient admissions, care, and various medical procedures.
Rehabilitation, Aged Care, Palliative Care Medicine (RAP): The RAP service at ERH is a multidisciplinary approach that includes working alongside a PGY2/3 under the supervision of a specialist Rehabilitation Physician. Interns encounter a diverse patient demographic, including those recovering from joint replacements and strokes, as well as those requiring geriatric evaluation and management or palliative care.
General Practice at Echuca Moama Family Medical Practice: Interns have the unique opportunity to engage with rural general practice at the award-winning Echuca Moama Family Medical Practice (EMFMP). Staffed by Rural Generalists, the practice offers a wide range of experiences from paediatrics to geriatrics, including various office-based procedures.
