Registrars in Hospital Setting
Senior Hospital Medical Officer (HMO)/Unaccredited Registrar
Post-graduate Year 3+ (PGY3+)
An experienced doctor who takes on greater clinical responsibility, often aligned to a specialty but outside a formal training program. They gain advanced hands-on experience, leadership, and decision-making exposure while preparing for entry into accredited specialty training. These roles are common in emergency medicine, general medicine, surgery, orthopeadics, ICU, psychiatry, O&G and Rural Generalist pathways.
To be eligible for Senior Hospital Medical Officers/Unaccredited Registrar roles you must have the following:
General registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Completion of internship or equivalent PGY1 experience, with demonstrated progression to PGY2+ Level
3-5+ years post graduate experience with ED experience, internal medicine and or surgical operative assisting and trauma/on-call exposure
Recency or practice within the past 1-3 years
Relevant clinical experience in the chosen specialty (e.g. Surgery, medicine, emergency)
Strong clinical references and supervisor reports demonstrating readiness for increased responsibility
Evidence of competence in independent decision-making, teamwork and communication
Completion of relevant exams/courses (e.g. College primary exams, ALS/EMST, etc.)
Demonstrated commitment to specialty pathway, especially if aiming for future accredited training

If you are an International Medical Graduate (IMG), to be eligible to apply with Connecting The Docs, you must have the following:
General registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) on Limited or Provisional Registration requires supervision
Passed AMC 1 and AMC 2 or Work-based Program preferable
Completion of internship or equivalent PGY1 experience, with demonstrated progression to PGY2+ Level

A formal training position within a recognised college program for doctors working towards qualification as a specialist. These roles combine structured clinical training, supervision, and examinations, leading to fellowship and independent specialist practice.
To be eligible for Registrars (Specialist Training) roles you must have the following:
General registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Completion of relevant junior doctor experience (PGY2+)
Meeting the college-specific eligibility criteria (varies by specialty, e.g. RACP, RACGP, RACS, ACEM, ANZCA, RANZCP)
Strong Australian clinical experience and referees
Evidence of commitment to the specialty (e.g. unaccredited registrar roles, exams, courses)
Citizenship or permanent residency (many programs prioritise or require this)
