Career Medical Officers & Senior Medical Officers (SMO)
POSTGRADUATE YEAR 4 –6+ (PGY4-6+)
Career Medical Officers and Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) are medical practitioners who work primarily in hospitals but are not currently in a specialist training program and are not employed as a Consultant/Specialist. These doctors are an important workforce, providing frontline hospital care, rotate through multiple departments, gain experience before applying to specialist colleges such as GP training (RACGP/ACRRM), physician training (RACP), surgery (RACS), emergency medicine (ACEM), anaesthetics and may work in these roles for several years.
To be eligible for Career Medical Officer & Senior Medical Officer roles you must have the following:
Completion of internship (PGY1) + (PGY2 preferred)
5+ years post-graduate clinical experience
General registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Hospital employment appointment

If you are an International Medical Graduate (IMG), to be eligible to apply with Connecting The Docs, you must have the following:

Specialists/Senior Consultants
POSTGRADUATE YEAR 4 –6+ (PGY4-6+)
Specialists/Senior Consultants are fully qualified fellows of an accredited specialist college and are among the most senior doctors in the Australian health system including public hospitals, private practice and procedural specialties. They are senior consultant doctors who are independently practicing experts, have admitting rights, on-call responsibilities, teach medical students and junior doctors, supervise teams and may lead departments/services.
To be eligible for Specialists/Senior Consultant roles you must have the following:
Completed an accredited specialist training program
Completed exams and gained fellowship with a recognised specialist medical college
Have been recognised by MBA/AHPRA as a specialist including FRACGP, FACRRM, FRACP, FRACS, FACEM, FANZCA, FAANZCP, FRANZCOG

Specialist International Medical Graduates are internationally trained specialist doctors (SIMGs) who have not yet obtained fully Australian specialist recognition with the relevant specialist college and are being formally supervised by Australian specialist peers and assessed through a “peer review” process against Australian standards on clinical performance, professionalism, communication and systems knowledge. The consultant must progress through peer review reports, workplace assessments, performance reviews and sometimes additional exams or additional training before eventually gaining Fellowship or Specialist Registration.
ACRRM Specialist Pathway
The ACRRM Specialist Pathway is an assessment pathway with a focus on rural and remote practice. It provides IMGs, with a recognised overseas general practice qualification, the opportunity to gain Fellowship with ACRRM and recognition and registration in the specialty of general practice while living and working in Australia.
RACGP Practice Experience Program Specialist (PEP SP)
The PEP SP is for Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) who hold a recognised overseas general practice specialist qualification and wish to apply for specialist recognition in Australia and be awarded Fellowship of the RACGP (FRACGP) via the Medical Board of Australia’s (MBA) Specialist Pathway – specialist recognition.

Rural Generalists (RG)
POSTGRADUATE YEAR 4 –6+ (PGY4-6+)
Rural Generalists are fully qualified GP fellows of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and the Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) who have undertaken Advanced Skills Training (AST) to enable them to provide community general practice along with an area of specific interest that may including inpatient hospital care, emergence department services, on-call services, advanced specialist services based on chosen AST discipline and supervision and teaching of junior clinicians and trainees.
To be eligible for Rural Generalist roles you must have the following:
Completed core general practice training with ACRRM/RACGP
Meet hospital and emergence medicine requirements
Completed Advanced Skills Training (AST)
Satisfied college assessments and workplace-based evaluations
Achieved Fellowship through ACRRM/RACGP
